Did you know that more than $25 billion is spent marketing food and beverages each year? Yet only $1 million is spent to market the 5-A-Day fruit and vegetable campaign. When you look at this discrepancy, it’s no wonder that one of the top lifestyle risk factors in the United States is not eating enough fruits and vegetables.

In order to promote a healthier diet, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is hosting “Fruit and Veggies—More Matters” during September. Total Well-Being has some creative ideas on how you can bring this campaign to your workplace.

The top lifestyle risk factor across Total Well-Being’s clients is nutrition. “We see it time and time again. Our client’s populations are not eating a healthy diet. Most people do not get enough fruits and vegetables,” says Kim Fickes, Account Manager. So, how can you encourage your population to eat five or more a day? One way is to use the tools on the MayoClinic EmbodyHealth portal.

The portal offers a robust recipe collection that you can browse by recipe with many options containing high contents of fruits and vegetables. You will also find short videos on how to prepare grilled pineapple and a healthy apple berry cobbler. The interactive Food Guide Pyramid is another tool that helps promote the importance of fruits and vegetables.

Another way to motivate your employees to eat fruits and vegetables is to promote a growing trend in food and nutrition: Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Over the last few years, CSA has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.

In a CSA, a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Interested consumers purchase a share and, in return, receive a box of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.

For additional information about CSAs or other food and nutrition trends, contact Total Well-Being. If you are a current TWB client, your Account Manager can post a link on your customized portal to CSAs in your geographic area.
